Heritage Christian Academy

Our school day is divided into 7 class hours for Middle School and High School students.  There is one 15-minute snack break and a 35 minute lunch period for these students.

Elementary students have two 15 minute recess periods in addition to a 35 minute lunch recess after their 35 minute lunch period.

Kindergarten students in addition to the elementary recess and lunch periods also have an afternoon nap time after lunch recess.

School Hours

Students may not arrive at school before 7:30 a.m. This is when the teachers are available for supervision. Kindergarten thru 12 grade students should report directly to the cafeteria upon arrival. The bell rings at 7:45 a.m. for dismissal to opening events when all students and staff gather in the gym.  Classes begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m. Please have your child at school by 7:45 a.m. so they have time to get their things together before they start their academic day at 8:00 a.m. If your child arrives after 8:00 a.m. they must be signed in through the office by a parent or guardian before they will be allowed to go to their classroom. Arrival after 8:00 a.m. will result in a tardy. Three tardies equal one day’s absence.

Attendance

The law requires that children be present during the hours school is in session. It is very important that a child be present each day in order to maintain a high level of achievement. Students who miss 45 days may be subject to repeating a grade.

Personal illnesses and emergencies are excused absences, but the student’s records will reflect the absence. If a student is absent for any other reason, that absence will be considered unexcused. Students are required to make up work but a grade of 0 will be given.  If your child will be absent, please notify the office before the start of the school day. For prolonged absences, arrangements need to be made with the office to receive assignments from the classroom teacher. Parents should not plan vacations when school is in session. Upon returning to school, a note must be presented, signed by a parent or guardian explaining the reason for the absence. Students may not miss more than 5 parent excused days without receiving zeros in all classes.

Students will not be allowed to return to class until a note has been received.

Arrival by Car

All vehicles use the north entrance and exit the south entrance. Drop children off at the double doors. Traffic flow must move at a continuous pace to get everyone into class on time.

Parent Pick-up

Please form a line with your car at the beginning of the white chain fence, at the exit to the parking lot, when waiting for your child to be released from school. Please do not come in the building before 3:00 to wait for the dismissal of your child. Parent pick-up will dismiss at 3:00 coming from the front entrance. Parents with elementary students need to come in the school and wait for your child in the front entrance hall. Students must be picked up by 3:15 or parents will be charged $10.00 per half hour per child. This fee is payable at the time of pick-up.

Entrance and Exit

All parents, students, and visitors must enter through the double front doors of the school. All other doors locked and no entrance will be permitted.

Early Dismissal

If early dismissal is necessary, please send a note that morning. A parent must come into the office to check their child out and should not go to the classroom. The school secretary will get your child out of class. Under no circumstance is your child’s teacher going to dismiss a student without the proper check out procedures followed.

State law requires each child to be in school 7 hours per day. K thru Elementary must be present for 3 hours and 31 minutes to be counted present for the day. High school students must be present 26 minutes per class period to be counted for that class period.

Emergency Closing

School cancellations or delays will be announced on television stations 2, 4, 5 and Fox from Nashville. Parents may also call the school for a recording or check the website. Parents have the responsibility to be aware of inclement weather conditions.

Parents need to have on file an inclement weather form so that your child’s teacher will know how to send your child home. When you specify how your child is to get home in case of early dismissal, this is what we expect you to follow. Parents will be called in case of early dismissals. Students must be picked up within 30 minutes of school closing to avoid after-school charges.

Absences

A student may miss up to 5 days per semester and be excused with a parents note. After the 5th day a doctor’s note must be submitted to the school for the absence to be excused. After the 5th absence, if a doctor’s note is not furnished upon the students return to school, the absence will be unexcused and the student will be expected to make up the missed work but will receive zeros.

Junior High - High School Tardiness

Students who are not in the classroom when the bell rings will be considered tardy to class. Three tardies constitute a one day unexcused classroom absence and the student will receive zeros for that subject that day.

Morning Tardiness

Three unexcused tardies to school by any student constitutes one day’s absence in all subjects. The student will be expected to complete work and will receive zeros in each class for that day. Two excused tardies per nine weeks will be permitted. After this, the student will be given an unexcused tardy regardless of reason.

Probation

Students who miss more than 10 days or have more than 5 tardies in one semester will be placed on attendance probation. Receiving a grade of a D or F will be grounds for a student to be placed on academic probation. Students placed on probation will not be able to participate in any extracurricular activities for 9 weeks.
